Course Description
This course seeks to provide the students with various opportunities to think, write, and have discussions about a variety of subjects and topics. Students will demonstrate an awareness of purpose, audience and environment, in a way that will support college, career, and social readiness. This course will also emphasize the use and practice of: analytical, expository, argumentative, personal, and reflective writing. Writing evaluation emphasis will be placed on content, purpose, and audience appeal. Students are expected to publish final documents when called for (i.e. typed papers).
Course Objectives
The student will demonstrate the ability to:
· Respond to a text by employing personal experiences and critical analysis.
· Compose a variety of modes by developing content, employing specific forms and selecting language appropriate for a particular audience and purpose.
· Comprehend l language by applying the conventions of Standard English in writing and speaking
· Evaluate the content, organization and language use of texts.
Required Daily Materials
Composition Notebook Journal
Students must acquire a college/wide ruled composition Notebook
Students must complete all journal entries and classwork, unless otherwise directed in the journal.
Journals will be checked randomly throughout the course.

Grading Policy
Grading Scale: A = 90 - 100 B = 80 - 89
C = 70- 79 D = 60-69
Homework, Class work, Worksheets, Journal Writings, Entries
= Full Credit = for FULLY completed assignments
=Half Credit = for partially completed assignments
=NO CREDIT/ RE-DO= for poor effort, not completed
Essays, Projects
· Rubrics will be supplied and will be used to evaluate essays and projects.
Extra Credit
· Extra Credit will be given for full page journal entries, or other activities, TOTALLY at the teacher’s discretion.

TYPED RHETORICAL PRECIS’
must be typed and submitted on time

EVERY MONDAY
· Complete a Typed Rhetorical Precis, using the template given as a foundation.
JOURNAL REFLECTIONS

· Must be ¾ page long)
· Students are to freely write journal entries at any free time at home, work, or at school.
· 3 Reflections are due EVERY WEEK
Impromptu Speech Presentations
